#166 GetRaidTargetIndex secret value cannot be turned into a texture/icon during combat (3 methods tried)

Status: Awaiting review · Area: Graphics & Art · Models & Textures

In combat, addons cannot show raid target markers because the marker number is a protected value that cannot be used to draw the icon.

Current behavior

GetRaidTargetIndex(unit) returns a "secret" number during combat for a marked unit. Every known way of turning that into a visible icon fails: 1. Manual coordinate math on UI-RaidTargetingIcons ((index-1)%4 etc.) throws: "attempt to perform arithmetic on a secret number value". 2. Blizzard's own SetRaidTargetIconTexture(texture, index) does not throw, but also draws nothing. 3. Building a per-icon file path ('...UI-RaidTargetingIcon_' .. tostring(index)) and calling SetTexture() also fails - tostring() alone works fine (can be printed to chat), but feeding that string into SetTexture() is refused.

Expected behavior

Addons should be able to show a raid target marker in combat like on Classic/Live - it's not sensitive data, just a marker the player themselves placed, already visible above the unit's head via the default UI.

How to reproduce

1. Mark an enemy with a raid icon (e.g. skull) before/during combat.
2. Enter combat with that enemy.
3. In an addon, call GetRaidTargetIndex(unit) on it - the returned value is "secret".
4. Try displaying that value as a texture/icon via any of these three methods:
   a) Manual coordinate math on UI-RaidTargetingIcons
   b) Blizzard's own SetRaidTargetIconTexture(texture, index)
   c) Building a per-icon file path with tostring(index) and calling SetTexture()
5. None of the three render the icon (method a throws an error, b and c render nothing).
